My Story

I spent the first 22 years of my life in New England, mostly in a small town on the Farmington River in Connecticut before completing my bachelor’s degree in journalism at Emerson College in Boston. I also spent lots of time in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, including three summers of dude ranch work in my early twenties. I fell in deep love with the West during this time, so I moved to Missoula in 2019 to get a master’s degree from the Environmental Science and Natural Resources Journalism program at the University of Montana.

After graduating, I worked in the hunting media for three years, first with MeatEater as an assistant editor and then with Outdoor Life as a staff writer. In May 2024, I took the dive and became a full-time freelancer after publishing over 430 articles across multiple outlets . I currently live in Austin, Texas with my fiancé (also named Austin) and our cat, Moo. We have plans to return to Montana for good in the spring of 2025.

Like most outdoor writers, I’m at my best when I’m outside, sweaty, and gasping for air. My favorite landscapes are the ones that make me feel small and my legs are my preferred mode of transportation. I love trail running, hiking, hunting, snowboarding, paddleboarding, and unstructured moseying, although I don’t log nearly enough time doing any of those things.

Let’s work together.

Hire me to write or edit in any freelance, contract, or part-time remote capacity. I also love public speaking, mentoring, project ideation, and general shop talk.
